I need a fully automated solar tracking system that uses GPS and IMU to optimize the orientation of solar panels for maximum energy capture throughout the day.
Key Requirements:
- The system needs to be completely automated, requiring no manual adjustments.
- It should be capable of tracking the sun's path and adjusting the panels accordingly to capture the most sunlight possible.
- Integration of GPS and IMU is a must.
Key Components
1. GPS Module:
Provides the vehicle's geographic location (latitude, longitude, and altitude).
Determines the local time, date, and solar position (azimuth and elevation) based on the
location.
2. IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit):
Measures the vehicle's orientation in 3D space:
Heading (Yaw): The direction the vehicle is facing relative to true north.
Roll: Tilt sideways (left or right).
Pitch: Tilt forward or backward.
Typically includes accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers.
3. Solar Position Algorithm:
Calculates the sun's position (azimuth and elevation) at any given time and location using GPS
data.
Algorithms like the Solar Position Algorithm (SPA) or similar are used.
4. Control System:
A microcontroller or embedded system (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or a dedicated PLC)
processes data from the GPS and IMU.
Computes the optimal panel orientation based on the sun's position and the vehicle's
orientation.
5. Actuators:
Motors or servos adjust the solar panel's tilt (pitch) and rotation (azimuth) to align with the sun's
position.
Ideal Skills and Experience:
- Previous experience in designing and implementing solar tracking systems.
- Proficiency in working with GPS and IMU technology.
- Understanding of solar energy systems.
- Ability to create fully automated systems.
